Announcing collaboration with GTR24H

No progress updates on the model yet guys, but I have just joined up with the guys from GTR24H so that they can run the track at their 24hr  GTR2 event this year. This can only mean more feedback for the model and a better public BETA release in the near future.......

  1. Looks great! The immersion level can only get better as it looks like you've definitely got a lot of momentum built up with this track. I think it's going to be a great finale for the long lasting gmotor2 engine to have this track, which everyone has wanted for so long, grace our screens alongside so many other great tracks that have been released. I think I'll be content for a great while still with gmotor2 thanks to work like this.

I had mentioned in a previous post that I was curious about how you determine dimensions and such for the buildings... can you give any tips for recreating track buildings? There are a couple I want to build in 3ds Max for a track I am working on and I am not sure if I should just guess on how to do it or if there are any things I should consider beforehand that a beginner might miss.

    Thanks.

  2. Find as many photographs as you can. Google Earth is a pretty good way of determining the size of a building in plan as you can measure it. Its not the most accurate way but it gives you a good base dimension.

I work as an architect so I've had experience building 3d models from various material sources. At the end of the day, unless you have an accurate survey you're going to be building your model from guesswork so its good to collate as much information as possible. I've been lucky to get to know a couple of guys who live in Le Mans and one of them has been kind enough to photograph all the new buildings along the mulsanne straight.

Determining heights from photos can always be difficult but there are certain things that you can spot that can help. People in photos are always good because you can get a rough height from them. Door heights are good for measuring. A standard door is 2100mm high so you can use that as a rough 2m dimension and compare it to the rest of the building. At the end of the day, its what looks right and that can only be determined by you. I tend to allow 3-4m per floor for a building then I'll tweak it after until I'm happy with how it looks. Photos from distance are good for this as you can see how the building stands within its surroundings.

If you race on Simraceway take a look at the stands at Indianapolis. They were all built from reference photographs, google earth, bing maps and watching multiple videos on youtube. The best way is to keep comparing real and virtual until you feel it's right. View your building model from the same angle as the photograph to make things line up.

  4. May I ask how near is a near future for you? I know it's a hard thing to estimate, so would it be weeks/months/years?

    1. Was running the GRID 5.0 mod with various tyre updates before my PC died. Will be trying GRID 6.0 when my new PC is up and running, but I feel it will still need the tyres updating for the prototypes.
